This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the comic book superhero, Spider-Man and his teenaged alter ego, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield). Now, after some time mired in a bygone era, the boy who understands that “with great power there must also come – great responsibility” has swung at full tilt into the 21st century.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” is a pleasantly modern take on the familiar tale. New York City is dark and dangerous. Bullying is unchecked at high school. Genetic research threatens mankind. Weapons of mass destruction loom large. Everyone is a photographer because everyone has a cell phone.

It’s hard to believe that is was barely 10 years ago that the first Spider-Man film was released. Here we are a decade later and we already have a reboot, new cast and a new director. I will admit, Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheros of all time, and I loved the first three films of the new millenium (I even enjoyed Spider-Man 3). But what director Marc Webb’s version offers is a well polished look at the franchise, pulling several aspects from different versions of the comics, and actually gives us a fresh take on the story we know and love.
